Pen-y-Ghent
Yorkshire Dales
694m
2276 feet

Difficulty Level 3/5 (4/5 with young children and the walk is unsuitable for prams)

Hi there!

We recently walked up Pen-y-Ghent in the Yorkshire Dales. At 694m, 2276 feet. It's just classifies as a mountain and so with young kids the round trip of around 8km was just about long enough.

We travelled there by car from Leeds parking at the Golden Lion pub in Horton in Ribblesdale approximately 4km from the summit of Pen-y-Ghent. The facilities at the Golden Lion pub are basic but they allowed us to prepare our kids before heading off towards the peak. There was a small charge for parking at the rear of the pub but we felt it was acceptable. The weather was good, slightly overcast but bright with a temperature of around 18c.

Our kids are three and six years old and they lead the way for us being far more energetic than we are. For the best part of the circular walk the path is good although there is a short section which is more difficult to navigate which is close to the summit where the path gets very narrow with steep verges to the side. For this reason I wouldn't recommend taking more children than you can comfortably look after safely.

Once at the summit, the views are spectacular for such a small "mountain", and there's seats at both sides of the dry stone wall at the top where you can shelter from the wind before making your descent back into the valley.

We would recommend this walk to other families with young children who like walking but it is worth taking all the necessary gear, good all weather coats and rambling walking boots along with enough food for the journey. The usual sandwiches, crisps and chocolate bars usually suffice.
